NEW ZEPPELIN NT PRESENTED AT AVIATION FAIR AERO
In Friedrichshafen a new generation of Zeppelins is being developed:
the Zeppelins NT (new technology).
Visitors at the AERO, a big aviation fair in Friedrichshafen, were able
to look at a 10 meter sized model of the Zeppelin LZ N07, its original nacelle
for 14 passengers and a lateral engine.
High-tech Zeppelins
The new airships are by no means nostalgic reproductions of the Zeppelins
built before World War II. They have the same shape and framework, but time
has not stood still since then. Four industrial plants in Friedrichshafen
cooperate on these high-tech Zeppelins. The new airships are as safe as any
passenger airplane. These stiff airships filled with inflammable helium
are extremely weatherproof because of a new type of covering and fully
manoevrable even in bad weather conditions with their two lateral engines
and a rear engine that reach a speed of up to 140 km/h.
The engines enable the airship to land independently, whereas formerly
up to a hundred ground crew were necessary.
TV transmission at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000
However there have not only been made technical changes, but the airships
will be used to entirely different purposes than in former times.
The new Zeppelin NT N07 will not only be used as a passenger aircraft, but
e.g. it will serve as a camera platform for TV transmission at the Sydney
Olympic Games in 2000.Its good performance in bad weather conditions will make it a convenient means of transportation in arctic areas. Further areas of use will be scientifice projects, e.g. observation of the oceans, as well as environmental projects, advertising and rescue operations.
The new Zeppelin is ecologically sound, it consumes very little energy,
is almost free of noxious emission, it moves almost noiselessly at a
hight up to 2500 m.
Inaugural flight in 1997
1997 at last will be the year of the inaugural flight of the LZ N07,
which seats 12 passengers and 2 captains. But this is only the first step
on the way to bigger airships already being
planned like the LZ N30 with 86 passenger seats.
