The new Zeppelin Museum under Construction

An Interview

On July 2nd, 1900 the first Zeppelin took off to a flight over Lake Constance. Exactly 96 years later, on July 2nd, the new Zeppelin Museum will be opened in the old harbour station of Friedrichshafen.

Mr. Sauter, the president of the "Freundeskreis zur Foerderung des Zeppelin-Museums", and Mr. Bluebaum of the art department of the museum kindly, answered our questions.

INTERVIEW INTERVIEW INTERVIEW

What departments will the Zeppelin Museum have?

Mr. Bluebaum : "The museum will be divided into a technology- and an art-
department. The paintings of the art department show how the notion of what is "art" has
changed from the Middle Ages up to now. The technology departement is inter alia divided
into construction ,civil and military aviation."

Will there be any changing exhibitions?

Mr. Sauter : "Yes- 3 or 4 per year. One is called e.g. "the art of flying" another one
is called "Why does man want to fly?"

How much will the renovation cost?

Mr. Sauter : In the meantime the 70-million limit has been reached. The museum will
be more expensive than planned, because it will beequipped with the latest computers.

How many visitors do you expect?

Mr. Bluebaum : "We expect that there will be about 200- 250 000 visitors per year, during
the high season up to 3500 visitors per day.The exact entrance fee has not been decided upon
yet, but it's certain, that the ticket prices will be differet for adults, pupils and students or groups.
In addition there will probably be week's and month's tickets."

Whatate you personally most interested in ?

Mr. Sauter : "I think, that the lifelike reproduction of LZ 129 "Hindenburg" will be the most
interesting thing. This 40 m long
reproduction gives people an ides of the size of a Zeppelin.
The visitors can enter it through a fallreep."

IDEAL SOLUTION: HARBOUR STATION

The old Zeppelin Museum, that was at the far end of the Townhall, was too concealed and has already been too small for a long time. The station, which dates from the "Bauhaus" perriod, is under a preservation order and had to be restored anyway, is an ideal solution. The station provides enough room for numerous exhibits, about 4000 m, and is situated very conveniently in the city centre and can easily be reached by train, ferry, taxi, car and on foot.On the 1st floor of the museum will be a restaurant, which will also be opened outside the opening hours of the museum.

The Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen Technik and Kunst willbe of interest for all age groups, e. g. there will be special guide tours for children.A library with about 14 000 books will be available for scientists, students and pupils, but it will also be open to all other persons.
